Catch Me If You Can: Fighting Fit feature on UFC Champion Dominick Cruz

Over the summer, Fighting Fit Magazine asked me to go to San Diego to hang out with the UFC Bantamweight Champion, Dominick Cruz, for last month’s cover story. The first attempt was a disaster. I drove from Huntington Beach and sat for three hours in traffic before getting to the gym, one of thousands in a daisy chain of idling cars and exhaust. The photographer arrived first and called with the news that Cruz and his coaches were all MIA, up in Los Angeles, fucking around with things I’d like to assume were less important than our meeting. For another week and after hours upon hours in the car, I tried to hold a grudge. But then I met them. Cruz and his coach, Eric DelFierro, are supremely easy-going, dedicated guys who were generous with their time. The result of our time together is below.

I’ll Be Watching You | Fighting Fit (January 2013): A look at how new video-based technology is revolutionizing sports analysis – and beating the competition.

Shortcut to Supremacy | Fighting Fit (September 2012) Dr. Michael Weisend of the Mind Research Network is in the habit of placing electrodes on the temples of willing subjects and sending mild electrical currents into their brains. It’s called Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), and Weisend found that in a sample of 500, subjects were able to double the rate at which they learned various tasks. It’s possible that what he’s doing is inducing the “flow” state. Fighting Fit Magazine had me investigate how it all applies to pugilism.

Code Breaker | Fighting Fit (May 2012): A company is using genetics testing in MMA athletes to better understand, and then train according to, their physical genetic makeup. Is it the next in cutting edge fight training or a pseudoscience letdown?
